Firestone Walker Brewing Company

3205 Washington Blvd., Venice, CA 90292

Brewpub restaurant. Good pizzas, burgers, and fish tacos. Rest of the menus looks good too, can’t eat fast enough! Between 16-24 beers on tap brewed right next door. About 10 minutes from the Hilton Marina Del Rey.

The Grape

55 Xinle Rd, Xuhui Qu, Shanghai Shi, China, 200000

Pane e Tulipani

Via Fabio Filzi, 12 Milano

Great pasta, great pizza, great steaks. Salad bar buffet at lunch. Very reasonably priced! Only a 5 minute walk from Four Points. Open for lunch, open for dinner 1900-2300.

Fork & Fig

6904 Menaul Blvd NE, Albuquerque, NM 87110

Really great sit down sandwich and burger place. Very relaxed. Bottled beer only. 5 minute walk from hotel. Behind hotel on the next block.

Red Crab Seafood

Leave the hotel by going through the restaurant. Cross the street directly in front of the stairs, left turn on sidewalk. At the next intersection, enter the pedestrian tunnel on your right. In the tunnel, right turn to the end and left turn up escalator to street level. The mall is directly in front of you up the escalator about 100 yards, left turn at the top, continue to the end of the walkway. Left turn and continue around to Greenbelt #3. Many nice restaurants on level 2 & 3 ahead of you. 10 minute walk from Peninsula.

Fadino’s Pizza

Q-City hotel, No.79 Panfulu

Pizza, Pasta, Salads and a few sandwiches on the menu. Approximately 15 different types of pizza. Small, medium and large. I had a chicken alfredo small and a Coke Zero and it was 54RMB ($8). Both inside and patio seating and a short walk from the China Hotel.

Depart out of the hotel along the Starbucks side and walk to the right. At the first intersection with street lights, bear to the right. About one block down on the right is the restaurant. Its set back as the second store front so keep your eyes out to the right.

Schmidt Haus

Very good german food in German Village. It’s a little over a mile to the restaurant but worth the walk if you choose to get some exercise.

Out the hotel, right on 3rd St. Go about a mile. Left on Kossuth.

240 East Kossuth Street, Columbus, OH 43206

Dinosaur BBQ

Outstanding BBQ place located approximately 1 mile from hotel. Hotel will drive you and pick you up. Also other great restaurants in “Armory” District of SYR.

Lucky BBQ

Across the parking lot from the hotel (Howard Plaza Hotel) is where you’ll find Lucky BBQ. It’s a 3 min walk around the parking lot to good food and beer. The owner’s name is Sabrina and she’s almost always there. She’s going to try a new idea to drum up some FedEx business so bring your FedEx ID for a free draught beer (it’s a local beer) The place gets full on weekend nights so go early if able. I think they open at 1400. If it’s full, there’s a long table on the sidewalk that may be open. Sabrina’s best friend is a hospitable lady from New York named Vicky. She’s a really fun person that hangs out there almost everyday. Her English is perfect and she’ll most likely join your table and give you all sorts of local information.

China Garden Hotel – Papa John’s

Strangely enough, Papa John’s will deliver to the China Garden Hotel until around 9PM local. Go to the concierge desk, ask for a menu. It’s around 100-ish yuan, so maybe $15-20 last time I was there. It was about a 95% accurate copy of a USA-made Papa John’s pizza, and a great alternative to the happy hour scooby snacks or the Hooker Heaven McDonald’s across the parking lot.

The “New” Bon Restaurant

The Bon Restaurant has moved. It is now only a block and a half away from the bus drop-off near the Narita Train Station. After getting off the bus, turn RIGHT and go down the hill. Continue across the street and go one block (about 250 feet) and look for the the Spiral Staircase sign in the front of the building. The restaurant is on the second floor, is larger, and has more seating than the old location. It is still all you can eat with a beer under 2000 yen.

Shanghai Brewery

From their website:
“Shanghai Brewery is a microbrewery, a high-quality restaurant and a sports bar located in Hongqiao in western Shanghai. We regularly brew 6 kinds of fresh hand-crafted microbrewery beers onsite, including People’s Pilsner, West River Weizen, North Star IPA and Black Eyed Bear Stout, as well as special seasonal beers such as the Brewmeister’s Choice. The Shanghai Brewery regularly produces 6 kinds of fresh, hand-crafted microbrewery beers as well as “Brewmaster’s Choice” seasonal special beers.”

Steelhead Grill

218 N Howard St, Spokane, WA 99201

Located a few doors down on Howard St from Riverside Dr across the park from the Red Lion Hotel. Offers 20% discount on all F&B to aircrew. Nice atmosphere and menu.

The Roxy

1121 SW Stark St. Portland, OR 97205

Eclectic Diner around the corner from the hotel. Open 24 hours and serves breakfast all day as well. Good for those early morning departures if you want to have a good meal.

Walk out of the door of the Benson turn right. At the end of the block turn right walk about 3 blocks The Roxy will be on the right hand side of the street in the middle of the block.

Trumbull Kitchen

150 Trumbull Street. Hartford, CT 06103

Great food. I’ve had multiple meals here and haven’t found a bad one yet. Good looking crowd and people trying to impress dates. More expensive than a chain restaurant, but worth it. Out the front of the hotel make a right and it’s a couple of blocks down on the left. Over 90% of the locals will recommend this restaurant if you ask where you should go for dinner.

Valença Restaurant

665 Monroe Ave. Elizabeth, NJ 07201

The single digit Uber ride is well worth the trip. It’s a shame there’s not a good way to walk there. Specialty are the meals served on hot stones still cooking as they arrive at your table. Cheaper than Ruby Tuesday and WAY better. Caution this place can have a long wait depending on time of day, it’s that popular. Call ahead.

Chuckbox

Best hamburger in the system. Bold claim, but true. This is a sawdust joint, old west themed hamburger grill with a limited menu, great prices, and some attitude. Heard of the soup Nazi? If the grillmaster (usually Juan) shouts out ‘What’re you having?’ and points at you, speak your order in a loud, clear voice or be skipped.

Beer and wine. Huge, well maintained condiment bar is second to none.

5 minute walk from hotel. Corner of Forrest and University.

Michos Tacos

905 4th Ave, San Diego, CA 92101

Very good and inexpensive Tacos. The fish tacos are very good, but they have quite a good variety of other tacos. It is two doors down on the southwest corner of 5th Ave and F St., which is a 5 minute walk from the Westin Hotel in the Gaslamp area. They are open for lunch and dinner. It is also a bar and becomes a night club after the restaurant closes at 9PM, so it does not look like a regular restaurant as you walk in.

Ashoka Indian Restaurant

47 Taojin Beilu

5-10min walk from Garden Hotel / Taojin Metro stop (Red line5)

Cross the street to right past Metro station, then left in front of 7-11, head down street about 1/4 mile on left side…excellent meal reasonable price 250-300rmb each included 3 beers or so..variety of hot and mild choices

Howard Hotel Lobby Bar

Hotel gives you a coupon for one free drink at the lobby bar upon checkin. Beer, punch, soft drinks are the options-a limited list, but a good starter. The bar offers a wide variety of beverages and a pretty good menu of food. Be on the lookout for “CK”, the hotel general manager that enjoys being in the bar visiting with hotel guests. He really enjoys visiting with FedEx pilots and has been known to buy numerous drinks (including top shelf scotch) until you’re ready to call it a night. Just fair warning when you encounter CK in the bar you’ll be in for a treat to lots of corny jokes and adult beverages. CK no longer works at the Howard Hotel; the GM has retired.

Bei Oma Kleinmann

Zülpicher Straße 9, 50674 Köln, Germany

Best Schnitzel in Cologne. Recommend going with about 6 people and order Schnitzel sampler. Can’t remember the exact name but everyone get’s a large Schnitzel, salad, potatoes, fries and about 6 gravies to choose from to poor on your Schnitzel. All for less than 15 euros each. Google search for address and map.

A nice cafe with great food very close to Bercy layover. This cafe specializes in the food from the Aveyron region of France. The staff is very friendly. To get there , go to the walking district next to the hotel, walk to the right. At the end of the walking street, go left and proceed two blocks. Jog to the left and the L’Auberge Aveyronnaise is on the right side of the street. Sidewalk seating is available weather permitting.

Big John’s American Breakfast

Big Johns is just 5 minutes from the Sheraton Hotel. Turn right, walk down Nathan to the first street crossing traffic light. Walk towards the I-Square Mall. Take the first street behind the mall and turn right. Walk half-way down the street and look on the left. You’ll see a PADI dive sign. Big John’s is a small restaurant below that sign. Recommend Big John #4. Cost is about 32HKG. It includes: scramble eggs with ham, toast, coffee and OJ.

Enoch’s BBQ

307 S National Ave.  Springfield, MO 65802

Two blocks from the Holiday Inn Express . Out the hotel to the left. Take a right on National Street one block. Restaurant is on the right in an old house. Excellent BBQ, super friendly staff. Most items are homemade.

The Toast Lady – Cafe Y

As advertised… Big American breakfast with Texas Toast. Most direct directions are listed below. Exiting station is difficult. Best I can offer is below. On map, exit is NNW corner of station.

Midosuji (red) Line-Namba Station (M20) to Umeda Station (M16). Four stops. Currently 240 yen, each way.

Ascend to street level and, within the mall, find the Umeda Train Station.
While facing the steps up to the train station, a sign for McDonalds should be on your left.
Turn right to put McDonalds behind you and exit to the street.
Immediately to your right and parallel should be an elevated train track. Looking over the track and across the street, you should see TOHO Movie Theatre and a ferris wheel.
(You will follow the track virtually all the way to Cafe Y.)
Keeping the track on your right, follow it, crossing the first road.
Then come to next major road. To your right should be the corner of the EST Building. Cross and continue, keeping the track on your right.

Position check-

Shortly after you enter this side street, you should see Chelsea Market under the track. Continue.

First street crossing-

Forming the corner under the track, you should find a small brownstone mexican cantina. Continue.

Second street crossing-

On your left should be a red walled restaurant named “Mine”. Continue.
The street should fork. Keeping to the track, you should shortly come to a major road. Cross and turn right, to face the track.
Looking under and beyond the track, you should see a Suzuki garage. Cafe Y is just next door (to the garage).

Current price is 800 yen (roughly $8). Dress coolly. It is small and, with the cooking, it is hot.

Karakus

2-5-9 Namba-naka, Osaka Kensai Japan

If you have a hunger for an inexpensive döner kebab, shawarma, or gyro this family run restaurant has your fix no matter what you call it. From the Swissôtel make a left at the McDonald’s intersection, in two blocks make a right and the restaurant is just less than two blocks down on your right after a parking lot. Open 10:00 – 23:00 everyday. It’s a six minute walk from the hotel.

Beer Belly

If you like Craft Beer there is a place called Beer Belly that carries beer from the local Minoh Brewery and a few other guest beers. There are nine taps total, three of which are cask ales. The beers are superb and the menu is excellent, recommend the Chicken with Hop Salt. The menus are in English. Hours of operation are M-Sat 1700-0000, closed Sunday. You will usually find a good mix of ex-pats and locals. The proprietor’s name is Yasu (pronounced Yas).

Beer Belly is located a couple train stops north of the Swisshotel and Namba station. If you search Google Maps, Beer Belly Osaka will show where it is. From the north side of the Namba station, take the stairs below street level heading north. Follow the signs for the Yotsubashi subway line (Blue). The signs will take you initially north and then a left turn, west through an underground shopping area. Total walk underground is approximately ¼ mile. Purchase a subway ticket for 200 yen and take the subway north three stops to Higobashi. Exit the station via the #3 exit. At the top of the stairs turn right to get to the back side of the building with the coffee shop and then left down the street behind the back of the APA hotel. Beer Belly is located on the right prior to the second intersection (two to three minute walk). The sign outside is a large mug of beer with some wooden barrels out front. The final train back to the Swisshotel is at midnight.

On the Riverwalk; oldest restaurant. Decent Tex-Mex food and a nice atmosphere.

Vatos Urban Tacos

Yongsan-gu, Itaewon-dong 181-8 2nd Floor. Seoul, South Korea

Best food I’ve had in Korea.  The tacos are the best I’ve had anywhere.  Chef from southern California.  Get out of your room and try it!

http://vatoskorea.com/

It’s a 15 minute walk over the hill from the Grand Hyatt in Itaewon.  It’s a $3 cab ride either direction if you don’t want to climb back up the hill.

1920

183 Yan Jian Zhong Lu, Haizhu Square. Guangzhou, China [Website]

This restaurant has great German cuisine.  I’ve dined at the original with a nice view on the Pearl River many times and recommend it.  It’s less than a 20 RMB cab ride from the A China Marriott.  A second location was just added, but haven’t tried it yet.  You can get both locations from the website

The Glenmore Rooftop at the Rocks

96 Cumberland Street, The Rocks. Sydney, New South Wales. Australia [Website]

Built in 1921 and recently reopened after a nine month renovation this trendy rooftop bar/restaurant has an outstanding view of the Opera House and harbour. It’s surprising reasonable for Australia and has a great selection of beer and hard cider.  The only downside if you don’t mind the climb is this place is almost always packed.

Harry’s Cafe de Wheels

Corner of Cowper Wharf Roadway & Dowling St. Woolloomooloo, New South Wales, Australia [Website]

This inexpensive food stand has been popular since WWII. It’s famous for their meat pies. I recommend getting your pie with the works that includes mashed potatoes and mashed peas. Anybody that’s ever been famous has stopped by Harry’s for a bite and they have the pictures to prove it. Everything is expensive in Australia with the exchange rate, but you’ll leave this place full for less than $7.

Quickest way there is the bridge/steps down the hill behind the Art Museum. But, the scenic way is through the botanical gardens.

Kilroy’s Bar N’ Grill

201 S. Meridian St. Indianapolis, IN 46225 [Website]

Popular bar that stays open late, catering to FedEx pilots. (You just have to have your drinks ordered before 3 a.m. most nights). The Pizzas are their specialty and I’ve ordered food there after 2 a.m.

Okonomi.yaki & Teppan.yaki

On the first floor of the building with the upstairs Hub Pub, there is an Okonomiyaki restaurant. Okonomiyaki is a Japanese style potato pancake. Some people compare it to an omelet because of the way you order what you want in it. They will put dried Bonito on top so let them know if you don’t want it. They have an English menu and the beer is cold and relatively inexpensive. Sit at the bar and watch the chef. It does take about 30 minutes to get your food, but it is worth it if you haven’t tried it. They also have Teppanyaki.

Hub Pub

Hub Pub

There are two nearby. When you walk out of the hotel facing the theater, if you turn right and go past the Starbucks on the corner and down the walkway, you will come to a four way walkway with a large building on the Northeast corner. Enter that building and follow the signs to the third floor. Pub food and beer.

For the second one, instead of going down the walkway for Starbucks, turn left and head north. A few alleyways up, on your left side near McDonald’s you will see a sign for another Hub Pub. This one is downstairs.

Jazz Minds

1661 Kapiolani Blvd. Honolulu, HI 96814

Nice club/bar
with live jazz every night. The Monday night entertainment is particularly good. From the Ala Moana hotel after exiting the front turn left then left again at the next intersection. Walk about a half
block and you will be at the rear of several bars and restaurants.
Walk through the parking lot. Or go to the traffic light (Kapiolani) turn left and look for the club on your left next to the bookstore.

Side Street Inn

1225 Hopaka St. Honolulu, HI 96815

A hidden gem of a restaurant 10 minutes from the hotel with reasonable prices. Try the Korean style short ribs known as ‘Kal Bal’. It is vaguely reminiscent of death by meat in Campinas. Everything looked great.

Rainbow Drive-In

3308 Kanaina Ave. Honolulu, HI 96815

A locals’ hangout that is great for breakfast or lunch. Fantastic food, but a DIVE. You sit in plastic chairs outside if you can find a seat. Go with the loco moco if you dare. It is rice, meat of some kind, gravy and two eggs on top with macaroni salad on the side. 10 minute walk from the hotel.

Delaney’s

Basement, Mary Building. 71-77 Peking Road, TST

Glacier Brewhouse

737 W. 5th Ave. Webpage
“The Brewhouse” is a great place to have dinner and/or drinks. Excellent food, great waitstaff and good ambiance. It does get busy at dinner, so plan ahead with reservations.

Double Muskie Inn

The original Double Musky was built in l962 and functioned as an after ski bar for many years. Customers cooked their own steaks over a fire in the front dining room (the only dining room at the time) and ate their food on picnic tables. On occasion, a polka band would play, tables would be moved and dancing would begin. The Musky was not very successful initially and passed through many hands. Bob and Deanna Persons bought the Double Musky in May of 1979 and the great adventure began. Following several years of struggling without employees, Deanna and Bob managed to find the key to making the Musky work. Numerous additions followed thereafter and the restaurant went on to be described by Esquire Magazine as the “last great American roadhouse.” It has also been reviewed favorably on two occasions by Bon Appetit and yearly by Fodors Travel Guide. Additional favorable reviews have been made by Honolulu Magazine, the Chicago Tribune, San Francisco Chronicle, New Orleans Times Picyune, New York Times and Anchorage Daily News plus a variety of other newspapers and magazines published around the U.S. We were even featured on CNN World-Wide in 1986. Most recently, we were featured nationwide on Food Network’s “Best Of” series with Jill Cordes in November and December of 2000. Also the Food Networks “Best Of” program not only had a page for us in their book, they named us one of their ten favorite restaurants in America. We were just selected as Alaskans’ favorite restaurant by two to one over the nearest vote getter in the Anchorage Daily News.

Buca di Beppo
